SUMMER CAMP

South Orange Country Day School offers a full year program with the same timings (including morning and after-care).  The difference with summer is that we go to a weekly schedule to enable families to enjoy summer plans.  In addition, for all students the summer schedule can be as flexible as the family desires.  You can sign up for the entire summer or for individual weeks, half or full days, and a few days a week.

Click here to see our weekly calendar outlining the daily activities for the summer.  For 2012 summer we have themed activities, field trips, and special visitors planned for each week.  Click here for the summer camp application.

The morning session starts with outside play, circle time, and learning center activities. The afternoon session includes extracurricular activities (art, music, French), as well as learning center activities. Water play (sprinklers, tubs, and slides) is one afternoon a week on Fridays.

Week 1 Beach Week July 2nd – July 6th (closed Wed.)

It is the beginning of summer and our week will be filled with wind, waves, sand, and shells. We will build sand castles and search for shells. We will make sun catchers and use fly swatters to paint.

Week 2 Olympic Week July 9th – July 13th

Let us celebrate the Summer Olympics. We will learn about the history of the games and make our own medals. We will also explore London and race across London Bridge.

Week 3 Animal Week July 16th – July 20th

Animals, their habitats and diets, from all around the world will be explored. We will explore “yucky” animals, as well as cuddly animals. We will also study fossils and piece together our dinosaurs! We will have a petting zoo at school to get a hands-on experience.

Week 4 Science Week July 23rd – July 27th

We are planning a week of experimenting! How do things work? How do gears and levers help us? How can we make colors from plants? Can we use the sun to mark the time? Can we see sound? What else can we figure out?

Week 5 Circus Week July 30th – August 3rd

We will all join the circus. We will make our own clown costumes and practice practical jokes. We will create a carnival with face painting and games. Our special guest will demonstrate juggling and other magical acts.

Week 6 Nursery Rhymes August 6th – August 10th

Do you know why the mouse ran up the clock? What is a tuffet, and do you eat curds and whey? Let us explore our rhymes and make our own! We will pretend to be the baker man, as well as Little Bo Peep.

Week 7 Transportation Week August 13th – August 17th

Climb aboard and explore how trains, planes, and cars help us move around our world. We will “race” to lay train tracks across the school yard. We will explore how transportation has changed through the ages, and new developments in transportation.

Week 8 Pirate Week August 20th – August 24th

Ahoy there matey! We will pretend to be pirates and bury treasure. We will make a map that will give us the key to the end of our summer party. We will make a sail boat and see if we can explore the cove. Finally, we might try to eat like pirates as well.
