Nursery I and Nursery II HOME
Children are accepted into the Nursery I class once they have reached two and one-half years of age and into the Nursery II class at three and one-half years. The Nursery I and II classrooms, geared to the size, pace and interests of our smallest students, provide environments filled with stimulating and attractive materials arranged within easy reach. The children may work alone or together in small groups on the tables, counters or on floor mats. The faculty keenly observe the needs and interests of each child. Daily work is derived from these observations rather than from a prepared lesson plan.

The Practical Life Exercises utilize familiar tasks, such as dressing dolls, polishing shoes, washing dishes or pouring water from pitchers. These activities are exciting to the young child because they imitate adult actions. Meanwhile the student perfects coordination, pays attention to details, learns to concentrate and develops goods working habits.

The Sensorial Exercises isolate one defining quality - color, weight, shape, texture or size. Using the Pink Tower, Red Rods, Brown Stairs, Color Tablets and Graded Cylinders, students learn to distinguish, categorize and integrate new information.

The Academic Exercises utilize geometric shapes, dot-to-dots and tracing materials to introduce writing. The children prepare Alphabet Books, Numbers Books and Colors and Shapes Books. Each child progresses as his or her interests lead from one level of complexity to another.
